Government Warning: Smoking Kills
by John D
Like any other teens, Brandon at his teenage days, was engaged to smoking, one of the most addictive substances teenagers are into. He started smoking when he was 15 years old due to peer pressures and later became addicted with it. He never realized that through the devastating effects of smoking, his life would never be the same again. It all started when he was injured with a broken glass on his foot, and eventually it refuses to heal itself. Because of this, Brandon decided to quit smoking after 3 and half years of puffing it. Later, he consulted doctors about his disease and only to find out that he is experiencing Buerger’s disease. The doctors explained that the disease is primarily caused by smoking and it restricts or blocks blood flow to the arms and legs and damaging its tissues. Reality bit him. Worse, the disease claimed his two legs. Now, at 25, Brandon is living a new life. Losing two legs is an everyday challenge for him. He is living a life that is uncommon to any youth of his age. However, this condition that strucked his life made Brando a better person, not only to himself but also made himself a role model to other youths of his age. At present, he is touring across countries to testify against smoking and is advocating and campaigning against tobaccos smoking.

Government Warning: Smoking Kills. This line is always attached to every cigarette pack in all sort of brands sold perhaps in every Sari-sari store along the streets. But does that warning really pays off? That leaves a question. Today, smoking is an addiction to everyone. It’s like a stigma attached to everyone, that when they can’t smoke it’s like their day isn’t complete. That leaves confusion.
The article is indeed a wake up call to everyone. It leaves a message that must not go unnoticed. The story of Mr. Carmichael is something we should consider and take into consideration. Yes, I agree with the saying that goes, “Regret always comes last”, a cliché but is already testable with reality. I was just so surprised of how Brando recovered from that ill-gotten disease known as Buerger’s disease. I really saluted him of how he rises up again from the darkest part of his life. Truly he emerged to be victorious. I would suppose that many youth who would experience the same disease as to that of Brando’s; they will surely commit suicide or find way to really end up their lives. I can’t imagine myself living without legs. But Brandon, take that as an opportunity to change his life for the better. He did not surrender but rather fight. At the end of the day, I just realized that life is a matter of choice whether to do it or not. Just like Brando, I would surely fight. I hope that this story would inspire other youths to stop smoking.

Smoking indeed is addictive, it just up to us if we let it control our lives. Again, that leaves a choice. Further, the learning I have in the nursing education is something I should bear and put in mind that this practice should be abhorred and condemned. Still, I want to follow Brando’s way of touching other people’s lives just how Brando`s story had touched my life. I want to be an advocate against cigarette smoking. I want to be an agent of change, a catalyst of radical movement against smoking. Again, that leaves an answer. I say, “Wake up everybody, let’s not stay up in bed”!!

smoking for many is said to be the hardest `bisyo` to overcome.maybe because its `addictive`.pro biyo nga eh,so addictive siya from the beginning. maybe because its really cheap. you can buy 2hi-`quality` sticks with the change from your local jeepney trip. maybe because its a fast pain/stress reliever. specially exam period or really though personal problems. but if you really think of it,its the ONLY item in local stores that if you buy one is useless to you. its useless because, after smoking, what ever you do with your breathe it should still smell. i know 1 stick is not enough, then your tend increase you sticks per day, therefore it becomes an additional weight to your budget. next your problems will be relieved, thats for sure, but only relieved not solved. smoking wont make your problems disappear,it can even add up more problems.
