Build, Building, Rebuilding
by Starlene Brille Paster
Last summer, Youth for Christ activities had been intentionally bombarded with Gawad Kalinga activities, more specifically the so-called builds. No question to that, since CFC, together with its ministries, is ultimately leading towards GK. The activities mainly focus on actual GK builds on GK sites and building up more partners for the GK Youth Village of Davao City. The series of activities kicked-off from the Summer Bayani Challenge, preceding the 14th International Leaders Conference in Naga City. Not to mention, I was one of the few privileged youth to become a part of the Davao City team. While we were in Naga, a series of youth builds had also been happening in the Youth Village of Davao City. Then, just last May, in partnership with Sangguniang Kabataan Federation, we had the 4-day YFC Davao version of the Bayani Challenge. Without a doubt, this revolution towards GK will definitely not conclude in the near future.

Being a Gawad Kalinga advocate and volunteer, and having realized those activities gave me a deeper and more profound understanding about GK. Nonetheless, in all GK immersions, I always have a reflective and thoughtful insight. Specifically in the Summer Build in Naga, God led me into this exceptional realization, which I openly shared to my team mates as well. Being in the build is not just about sacrifice and help. We do not need to go any further or to be intellectually responsive -- it is simply TO BUILD.

Yes, you read it right, to build. This may sound cliché but remarkable meanings are derived from it. For me, being in a GK site is not just to literally build but also to build relationships with the beneficiaries, the old and the young. It is to build relationships with our fellow GK workers, partners and volunteers, strangers they may be. These relationships should be built on strong foundations, because nonetheless, we are building our own native land. Looking at it deeper, being in the GK site would make me reflect on myself more. It is a time for me to REBUILD myself. Yes, it is a time to reflect on the different areas in my life that were once destroyed but is now on the brink of rebuilding and healing. Yes, it is rebuilding one’s self and yet, it is a continuous process.

This is quite a big challenge for all of us. Every time we go to GK sites, let us not just look on the work that we can do, but let us might as well look deep into ourselves and see if there’s a heart that needs to be rebuilt.
